Syllabus

Learning Outcomes:

After completing this course, learner will be able to:

1) specify coordinates of any celestial body at given time and place

2) convert given celestial coordinates to convenient form for astronomer

3) use Kepler equations to predict motion of planets and comets

4) explain orbital elements of celestial bodies

5) calculate probability of eclipses under various celestial conditions

6) predict future eclipses from given place and time

Spherical Trigonometry: (8 sessions, total 12 hours)

Eccentric orbit (6 sessions, total 9 hours)

Lunar orbit and eclipses (6 sessions, total 9 hours)

Mode of Assessment:

  1. Regular submission of assignments - 25%
  2. Presenting an mathematical model for given astronomical situation - 25%
  3. Quiz and test - 50%
  4. Passing criterion: scoring 50% and above
